A long-standing corruption scheme in the Sofia Inspectorate has created a parallel system for the disposal of construction waste and earth masses at over 240 unregulated landfills in the territory of the Sofia Municipality. In addition to the serious environmental risks caused, the abuses uncovered by the new management of the Inspectorate are costing Sofia’s budget hundreds of thousands of leva.

In this investigation, entitled “The Lords of the Dust,” the ACF is publicizing the problem and calling on the investigating authorities to answer to the public who the people involved are and how high up in the Sofia Municipality structure the protection for the scheme went. Furthermore, is it possible that the position of director of the Sofia Inspectorate is worth BGN 500,000? Which companies are abusing the program for the removal of bulky waste in Sofia? Who is sabotaging the efforts of the new leadership of the Sofia Inspectorate and the Sofia Municipality to put an end to illegal practices?
