ACF is analyzing documents related to Bulgaria in the leaked email of Alexander Babakov, a Russian politician and hero of several corruption scandals. The emails reveal unknown moments from the kitchen of the “Turkish Stream” project, presented in Bulgaria as an extension of the national gas transmission network.
The documents raise the question of who is the real client of the “Turkish Stream” project and whether the entire construction procedure is not just a cover for geopolitical commitments made at a higher level.
In addition to being a deputy speaker of the Russian Duma and an advisor to President Putin, Alexander Babakov is known as a participant in several corruption scandals, including the financing of Marine Le Pen’s party in France and an attempt to bribe a Bulgarian deputy minister of energy in 2013 in relation to the “South Stream” project, which was exposed by the “New York Times”.
