Yuliyan Yankov, known as “Kartofa,” has gone into hiding from the prosecution authorities and his whereabouts are unknown
Mediapool reports that Yuliyan Yankov, known as “Kartofa,” has gone into hiding from the prosecution authorities and his whereabouts are unknown. According to the Prosecutor’s Office, he has been declared wanted nationwide, while the court has authorized the execution of a European Arrest Warrant. This means that Yankov can be sought by law enforcement authorities across the European Union, detained, and returned to Bulgaria.
The prosecution’s statement indicates that Yankov was repeatedly summoned for questioning and other investigative and procedural actions, but failed to appear on every occasion. He has been charged with the misappropriation of five passenger cars, six trucks, and one trailer, which, according to prosecutors, he rented, stopped paying for, and failed to return to their owner.
Yankov’s name gained prominence following the Anti-Corruption Fund’s investigation “Roadside Assistance Gone Wrong”, which uncovered evidence of how the company Unit Assist, linked to him, received millions of euros from the state through a scheme involving the unlawful subcontracting of services under the so-called free roadside assistance programme.
