Za istinata: An Onyx Stone Sign in a BGN 500,000 Park Stirs Controversy in Shumen
Rather than dealing with a number of unresolved issues, municipal officials in the town of Shumen ordered a 20-kilogram onyx stone sign, bearing the city’s name, built a fountain and planted some flowers.
The intervention if front of the town’s courthouse cost BGN 500,000 or BGN 500 per square meter. The funding was directly allocated by the government from the 2017 national budget surplus. While municipal officials look forward with excitement to the official unveiling of the project, the public is anything but enthusiastic. On the one hand, the park in front of the courthouse had been in relatively good condition, making the upgrade unnecessary. On the other – the town has much more pressing problems to solve. This is why both citizens and municipal councilors see the project as a symbol of public funds wastage.
