Capital: National Railway Infrastructure Company Awards Multi-Million Lev Contract to Company Linked with Controversial Former MP

United Property Group has been awarded a BGN nine million contract to deliver railway tracks to the National Railway Infrastructure Company. While the private company is not publicly well-known, it is linked to a person who seems to be a favorite of the state-run entity.

Ilia Iliev is a former MP from the Movement for Rights and Freedoms party and chairperson of Drom, a political party claiming to represent the Bulgarian Roma minority. United Property Group’s 21-year-old owner, Hristo Iankov, is Iliev’s nephew, while the company is managed by Iliev’s brother – Iordan Iliev.

Several years ago, companies linked with the then MP won a number of public tenders, organized by the National Railway Infrastructure Company. The companies were supposed to repair railway tracks but the works were carried out by public companies. As a result, the Public Prosecution asked that Iliev was stripped of his immunity. In March this year, he was found guilty of embezzlement on a large scale and is currently on probation.
