Venelin Petkov
Venelin Petkov is a journalist with 30 years of experience, both in Bulgaria and abroad. He started his career in 1994 at the foreign news section of the Bulgarian Telegraph Agency. From 1998 to 1999 he was associate producer with CNN International, based at their headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. He then returned to Bulgaria to joint the Bulgarian National Television where he worked as reporter and presenter.
Venelin is among the founders of the national news section at bTV, the first private national TV channel which at one point was the most reputable information source in the country. Joining in 2000, Venelin was a reporter and news anchor before moving on to producing documentaries. From 2014 to 2020, he served as Director of News, Current Affairs and Sports.
A Fulbright scholarship alumna, Venelin is a 2007 recipient of the Peabody Award for his documentary A Journey Across Afghanistan: Opium and Roses. He holds an MA degree in Broadcast Journalism from the University of Missouri-Columbia, USA (1998) and an MA in English Philology from the Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” in Bulgaria (1996).
